(1) The Ryanair diversion
On May 23, the Belarusian authorities arrested journalist Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend, Russian citizen Sofia Sapega, after removing them from a Ryanair flight that was diverted to Minsk. The passenger plane, which was travelling from Athens to Vilnius, was forced to land in Belarus after the authorities reported an alleged bomb threat on board. Many European countries believe the Belarusian authorities hijacked the passenger plane in order to arrest Protasevich.
(2) The Gutseriev family
Mikhail Gutseriev’s brother, Sait-Salam Gutseriev; son, Said Gutseriev; and nephew, Mikail Shishkhanov, are all prominent businessmen.
(3) What dispute?
On January 1, 2020, Russia cut off raw material supplies to the Belarusian oil refineries Novopolotsk and Mozyr, because Moscow and Minsk had failed to sign a supply contract for the new year. As per usual, the dispute arose over prices for raw material — Lukashenko wanted to maintain 2019’s prices, while Russia wanted to raise them.
