Update: As of 5:53 p.m. local time, Kyiv authorities said that 21 people had been killed. Among the dead are four children, including a two-year-old.
Russian forces launched an overnight drone and missile attack on Kyiv, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city’s military administration.
As of 8:08 a.m. local time, officials reported eight people dead, including a 14-year-old girl. Forty-eight people were injured. The casualty figures are still being updated.
Local officials said residential buildings were among the targets. In the Darnytskyi district, part of a five-story apartment building was destroyed from the first through the fifth floors, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported. Rescue workers are still clearing the rubble.
In all, hundreds of sites across six districts of the Ukrainian capital were damaged, including residential buildings in the Dniprovskyi district, Tkachenko said. A shopping mall in the city center was also hit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the massive Russian strike on Kyiv was “a clear response to everyone in the world who, for weeks and months, has been calling for a ceasefire and for real diplomacy.”
Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table. It chooses to continue killing instead of ending the war. And this means that Russia still does not fear the consequences. Russia still takes advantage of the fact that at least part of the world turns a blind eye to murdered children and seeks excuses for Putin.
Zelensky urged the governments of China and Hungary to respond to the attack and called on Western countries to impose new sanctions on Russia. “All deadlines have already been broken, dozens of opportunities for diplomacy ruined. Russia must feel accountable for every strike, for every day of this war,” he said.
