U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday, August 8, that he will meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on August 15 in Alaska. “Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” the U.S. president wrote on social media, using his signature sign-off. The two leaders are expected to discuss a ceasefire plan in Ukraine, although Ukrainian officials are not expected to attend the Alaska summit.
Senior Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov confirmed the Alaska meeting, telling reporters: “Russia and the United States are close neighbors, so it is quite logical that the leaders’ summit would take place in Alaska. In Alaska and the Arctic, the economic interests of Russia and the United States intersect, and prospects for implementing large-scale projects are evident.”
Putin’s visit to Alaska will be the first time he’s set foot on U.S. soil since September 2015, when he met with U.S. President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Putin has never been to the U.S. West Coast before. The trip will mark his first documented visit to any part of the western United States.
