U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States will impose steep tariffs on Russia and its trade partners if Moscow does not reach a deal to end the war against Ukraine.
Speaking at the White House during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump threatened “very severe tariffs” if no agreement is reached within 50 days. Trump said the tariffs would be “about 100 percent,” as quoted by Sky News.
“One of the reasons that you’re here today is to hear that we are very unhappy, I am, with Russia,” Trump told Rutte, as quoted by Reuters.
“But we’ll discuss that maybe a different day. But we’re very, very unhappy with them, and we’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days,” Trump added. He said trade is “great for settling wars.”
Following Trump’s remarks, the Moscow Exchange Index rose sharply by 2.41 percent, reaching 2,705.92 points.
In 2024, trade turnover between Russia and the United States totaled $3.5 billion — the lowest level since 1992. In 2021, before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the figure stood at $35 billion.
