Update: Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump have concluded their phone call. The conversation lasted more than two hours.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have begun a phone call, according to the Associated Press and Reuters.

Trump had earlier said the conversation would focus on ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as on trade.

Ahead of the call with Putin, Trump spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to Ukraine’s United News broadcast, which cited a source.

After speaking with Putin, Trump reportedly plans to call Zelensky again, along with various NATO members.

Earlier, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said that negotiations to end the war in Ukraine had reached “a bit of an impasse.” He suggested that the U.S. president would try to determine whether Putin is genuinely committed to ending the conflict. “I’m not sure that Vladimir Putin has a strategy himself for how to unwind the war,” Vance added. He also warned that if Russia is not prepared to negotiate seriously, the United States would withdraw from the process.

Ahead of Trump’s call with Putin, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president had “grown weary and frustrated, with both sides of the conflict.”

Trump and Putin last spoke by phone on March 18.

The current round of talks comes in the wake of a meeting between Russian and Ukrainian delegations held in Istanbul on May 16, part of an ongoing effort to end the war. Commenting on the upcoming Trump–Putin call, the Kremlin described it as “an important conversation, in light of the recent talks in Istanbul.”
