A prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine involving 1,000 people from each side may take place in the near future, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said after talks in Istanbul, according to RBC Ukraine.
“We know the date, but we’re not disclosing it yet,” he said.
Umerov said the negotiations addressed “all modalities” of a possible ceasefire and added that further details would be shared later.
He also noted that the talks included discussion of a potential meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia. “We’re working on it,” RBC Ukraine quoted him as saying.
Speaking after the talks, Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian delegation, confirmed that the two sides had agreed to carry out a “1,000-for-1,000” prisoner swap in the coming days.
He added that both sides had agreed to present their respective “visions for a possible future ceasefire” and that Ukraine had requested direct talks between the two heads of state. “We have taken that request under advisement,” he said.
