State Duma deputy Valentina Tereshkova has proposed an amendment to Russia’s constitutional reform legislation that would reset the term clock to zero for all future presidential candidates. In other words, Vladimir Putin would be able to win another two elected terms in office, extending his presidency to 2036.

The first woman in space, Tereshkova said it’s necessary “either to remove the restriction altogether or, if the situation requires it and people want it, to provide in the law the possibility for the incumbent president to be re-elected to this position.”

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin says Tereshkova’s proposal must be discussed with the leaders of the parliament’s party factions and with President Putin himself. After this announcement, the Duma announced a recess. Sergey Neverov, the head of United Russia’s faction, has already endorsed the proposal.
